How Important Is It To Go To Church?

How Important Is It To Go To Church?

I am taking a detour from my usual blog posts to ask a question that I am having trouble resolving. The question is this: how important is it REALLY to attend church EVERY week? (I'm talking lower-case C church here. The weekly meeting kind. Not the upper-case Church that is the body of Christ. Just to clarify and avoid a tirade of comments at the end.)

WAIT! Let me explain why I am asking.

My family faithfully attends church almost every single week. Even when we are on vacation (which is usually to visit family) we attend church with whatever family member we are visiting. Only on rare occasions when we have planned a romantic weekend away (just the 2 of us), do we take a break from church. This happens about once a year, tops.

You might think that our strict church attendance is based on some religious overture. Or perhaps on a sense of duty or obligation (I do WORK for my church, after all. Aren't I partly obligated to attend?) Or maybe it is even out of habit or tradition?

Nope - those are good ideas, but they're not why.

The truth is, we attend church every week because WE LOVE GOING TO CHURCH. We love the corporate worship, the edification that comes from hearing the sermon, the socialization with our friends, the Bible instruction for our children in kid's church, the incredible feeling of closeness that we get when we talk about what we learned, or what God spoke to us, after church is over. We love it. We love hearing something fresh from God, and hearing what God is doing in the lives of our church family. We love getting another glimpse of Jesus through the way the church body functions and ministers and loves each other.

We just LOVE it all.

(This may be in part because we attend just about the greatest little church in the history of the world. Personal bias totally included in this statement. And I totally hope you feel the same way about your church!)

Lately I have been noticing how many Christians DON'T attend church regularly, and I am honestly wondering why that is. And more importantly, whether or not it really matters. I mean REALLY matters.

I could write a sermon right now about how important I think consistent church attendance is, and why. But I am admitting my personal bias, because I love church so stinking much. Maybe I don't see the very legitimate reasons not to attend regularly?

So I REALLY want to hear what you think. Are you are regular Sunday morning meeting attender? And why or why not?

Please, please, please let me know. Pretty please?
