Imitators of Christ
"Be imitators of Christ like dearly loved children." Ephesians 5:1
Don’t you just love it when little kids play dress up?
Princesses.
Firefighters.
Ballerinas.
Knights in Shining Armor.
My children are a little older now, and it seems like their dress-up days are far behind them. Although my 8 year old son did come downstairs just the other day in an old Spiderman costume. It was far too small for him, but he didn't seem to mind. I knew enough not to laugh. At least, I waited until he was in the other room before falling over in giggles.
It reminded me of the days of their youth when dressing up and playing make-believe were just par for the course.
Here he is, at the tender age of 5, when the Spiderman costume still fit. |
I miss those days. Whether my children were all decked out in sequins or sparkles or construction hats, it warmed my heart to watch them play pretend.
Children imitating adults make such a beautiful picture of innocence and tenderness: kissing their doll’s boo-boos, fighting off imaginary foes. Sometimes they are hysterically funny - wearing high heeled shoes and silly hats. Sometimes they are dangerously courageous - sure that they can jump off the top stair because they have their super-hero cape on. But they are always endearing in their earnest attempts.
Last week in our Sisters for Real bible study, we read Ephesians 5:1. I got the image in my head of my kids, playing make-believe, dressed up in silly clothes.
And I smiled.
Because if God tells us to be imitators of Christ as dearly loved children... well, then... we can all breathe a little easier.
- If we're His children, then He knows that we're not going to get it right every time.
- If we're His children, He knows that we sometimes feel way out of our depth.
- If we're His children, He knows that we're often dressed up in clothes that don’t fit, trying our best to act like Jesus would.
God isn't surprised when we stumble over our shoes. He doesn't laugh when we appear in a costume that's two sizes too small.
God sees us for who we really are, under the pretend and make-believe, and He loves us.
When the world tries to tell you that you are failing, that you aren't enough...
When you look in the mirror and feel like a fake...
When you feel like you are only playing at this game called life...
Remember.
You are just a child.
A dearly loved child.
You don't need to have it all perfect. You don't need to get it right every time. You don't need to have it all figured out.
So throw on your feather boa or your super hero suit, and keep on imitating Jesus.
